About the Job

The primary purpose of this position is to assist with operations of the campus steam and condensate systems and work towards obtaining a Class 1B Boiler Engineer's license or higher. This position will complete maintenance and inspection activities for all steam, condensate, heating, and other campus systems. This position will take direction from the Heating Plant Supervisor, and will assist with dispatch calls, routine work, and preventive maintenance.

(60%) Essential Functions:

  • Required to work rotating shifts 7 days per week with Senior Operating Engineers.
  • Assist with operation of high pressure boilers and their auxiliaries and respond to boiler alarms and problems.
  • Assist with feed water pumps, condensate pumps, compressors, water softeners, and other equipment in the Heating Plant and throughout the Campus.
  • Test/treat boiler water and condensate.
  • Monitor outlying boilers and equipment using computer monitoring system.
  • Take meter readings and complete daily log sheets timely and accurately.
  • Clean and adjust fuel oil strainers, tanks, and related equipment.
  • Make basic computer entries using PC, boiler controls, or monitors.
  • Keep supervisor informed of potential problems.
  • Respond to emergency service calls during shift or after work hours.

(40%) Essential Functions:

  • Make campus rounds, inspect systems, and fill out log sheets.
  • Make repairs and adjustments to pumps, valves, boilers, compressors, and other equipment in the Heating Plant and throughout the Campus.
  • Dismantle equipment for inspection and repair.
  • Prepare boilers and boiler safety appliances for yearly inspection.
  • Close valves, drain boilers, remove manhole covers and hand hole plates, scrape drums and clean tubes.
  • Take periodic inventories of stock.
  • Complete work orders as assigned.
  • Demonstrates courteous behavior to customers, workers, and members of the campus community.
  • Know and follow Safety procedures and policies.
  • Participate in team meetings and decision making within the work unit.
  • Perform other work as assigned by Supervisor.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to obtain MN State Special Class Boiler Engineer's license within 6 months.
  • Ability to obtain MN State Class 1B Boiler Engineer's license after applicable experience is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Understanding of basic computer software (Windows) systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience operating or maintaining heating boilers is preferred.
  • Technical education/training in mechanical maintenance and/or applicable work experience to total three years. Education/training can account for no more than two of the three years.
