The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) seeks to build our pool of adjunct instructors.

We seek to add 1 full time and/or several part time instructor positions for the 2023-2024 academic year. Appointments may include online weekend synchronous classes, online classes, in person day classes, and/or hybrid courses. Note: Being a member of the pool does not ensure a contract will be offered; course offerings, and therefore teaching appointments, vary with demand and available funding. Full time instructor(s) will be responsible for serving as an undergraduate and graduate advisor for a diverse community of students; participating in departmental meetings, faculty governance, and professional service.

Candidates are encouraged to apply whose specialization includes expertise in Federal Indian law; Tribal administration and budgets; leadership and ethics; and human resources.

Required Qualifications

• Doctorate degree or All But Dissertation (ABD) status in a related field OR comparable terminal degree (i.e. JD) OR Master's degree in a related field coupled with a minimum of seven years professional experience in working with American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian tribal governments and/or communities.
• Two or more years of relevant college-level teaching experience or comparable professional experience in a relevant field.
• Proficiency, or the willingness to become proficient, in utilizing instructional technologies (i.e., CANVAS).
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Preferred Preparation and Experience

• Ph.D. in hand
• Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in teaching, including use of instructional technologies (i.e., CANVAS)
• Experience working with diverse populations
• Knowledge and experience working with American Indian nations
• Established record of scholarship (i.e., publications)

The Department of American Indian Studies is committed to excellence in graduate and undergraduate education.
